5 Bleak House Readalong Ch 1-7

As you might have read, I have had Bleak House sitting on my bookshelf for some time. I found this readalong and thought "What a great idea!" so I signed up for it. Then a couple day ago I thought "What have I done? How am I going to find time to read this?" Well, I finally found some quiet time time and I am glad I did! How did my first seven chapters of Bleak House go? Well I am glad you asked!

I really liked the characters of Bleak House.  Esther is my favorite. My heart broke for her in the beginning. I look forward to seeing her character grow and develop more.  Mr. Skimpole is my least favorite. He drove me up the wall! Maybe it's because I know people like him in my life. People who don't take responsibility for their lives and expect other people to clean up the messes they made. GRRRRR  Anyway, Charles Dickens described London in such a way that I feel like I have been there.  In my mind I could see the streets, the fog, people walking on the sidewalk.  I enjoyed the first seven chapters and I can't wait to read more.

  1. Glad to see you're enjoying this; personally I found Esther really annoying and I'm wondering if she will eventually show more of a personality instead of being so blah. I also didn't like Mr Skimpole-I mean he friggin preyed upon the young people expecting them to clean up after himself. He's an adult!

  3. I wish the first installments had worked so well for me! I did like Esther though. Everyone keeps describing her as too saccherine but I don't mind her at all! Mr. Skimpole is nuts, though.

  4. I HATE Skimpole! He makes me so crazy-- like he's doing THEM a favor, lending him money, so they can feel good about themselves. I hate people who refuse to take responsibility for themselves. Mrs. Jellyby is pretty annoying too. But what a great writer Dickens is, if he can create such a vivid character.

  5. Mr. Skimpole is my least favorite character so far, too. I think this is going to be fun...
