14 Sunday Confessions January 30, 2011

This is a weekly meme started by yours truly as a way to get to share a bit about myself and also learning more about you. Sometimes its about books and book related topics and sometimes it's not. This is all in good fun and I would love it if you would participate.

How do you arrange your bookshelves?

I have to confess right now that my bookshelves are a bit of a mess.  They don't really have a rhyme or reason to them.  I'm usually a very organized person and the state of my bookshelves have been bugging me for some time. I have books scattered throughout my home. In my home office I have three bookshelves that have a little order. I've grouped some books by authors and others by genres. In my bedroom I have a bookshelf full of books that I want to read and a few stacks of books beside it.The books I have for review are stacked upon my desk right now and are slowly taking over. I know I am in desperate need of a new bookshelf or two, so I'll probably be buying one in the next few weeks. I'm also a little OCD when it comes to placing hardcovers and paperbacks together. I also like to have books that are similar in size grouped together.  However as chaotic as it sounds, if you were to ask me where a certain book is in my house, I could tell you.  I need some ideas on how to arrange my bookshelves. I brought this topic up on twitter and received some good responses but it left me wondering "How do you arrange your bookshelves"

  1. I arrange my novels by genre then by title. Though, most of my novels are either YA or non-fiction. :)

  2. My shelf is a mess too, because I've moved recently and haven't had time to do the true arrangement. My ideal arrangement is all my writing books on the top shelf, literary fiction on the next, romances and other guilty-pleasure books on the next, then my weird mythology themed collection from vampires to angels and random collection of religious analysis from Islam to Christianity to Wicca to Buddhism.

Then, aside from that, I have this little desktop book rack in which I have a revolving collection of books that currently top my list o'adoration.

  3. My books are arranged by genre and then author. However, I have one shelf that is completely devoted to paranormal YA, it's in height order. First is the hardbacks, then the books that have some paperback, some hardback in a series, then last comes the paperbacks, and they're arranged by author too.

  5. I have several "areas" that I have my book arranged. Downstairs on either side of the fireplace I have my "collections" (WWII, biographies, stephen king, YA authors that I collect..etc.) Also downstairs I have three huge bookshelves that are home to most of my TBR hardcovers arranged alphabetically (I also have some of the books by authors that I collect) Upstairs I have a bookshelf dedicated to all the classics. In my office I have bookshelves that have all my TBR paperbacks arranged alphabetically along with my review requests. There is one small bookshelf in my living room that I put the books that I plan to read each month so I don't forget (get side-tracked) about them.

  8. Hey!
My bookshelves are a mess. My boyfriend was looking at them just before Christmas to see if I already had a book he wanted to get me and he couldn't believe that even the books by the same author weren't together. I just chuck mine any old place as long as they fit!
I need new bookshelves though as I have a growing pile on the floor next the shelves which need a home!! :)

  10. @Raimy-rawr I'm glad to know I'm not the only one w/ messy shelves. LOL

@The Book Pages I'm thinking that's how I'm going to organize: putting series and authors together. :D

  11. I am with you. My bookcases are typically a mess - except the one in the dining room because that is the one people see when they come over.
