10 Sunday Confession March 27, 2011

This is a weekly meme started by yours truly as a way to get to share a bit about myself and also learning more about you. Sometimes its about books and book related topics and sometimes it's not. This is all in good fun and I would love it if you would participate.

This week's question is:

Do you judge a book by it's cover?

As book lovers we all know that what's important is what lies beneath the covers, the storyline. If a storyline is bad it doesn't matter what the cover looks like, it's not going to change the story. Sometime covers can be a bit cheesy but the story line is fantastic. However, has a cover ever influenced you to buy a book or not buy a book? I have to admit that when I'm browsing in a book store and I happen to see a beautiful cover, it's hard not to pick up the book and at least check out the blurb on the back.  I don't believe I've ever purchased a book based on the cover alone but I have to say I think it helps. So what about you?

*If you answer this question on your own blog please leave a link in the comments so I can come visit.

  1. I can see that. I've definitely picked up my fair share of books due to their covers. It makes me more apt to check out the synopsis on the back to see if it's anything I would like to read. I think a good cover can go a long way for garnering attention for a book. If it catches your eye, you're more likely to at least check it out.

  2. I usually head to the bookstore with a book in mind, but once I'm there, novels with beautiful covers do call/wave/shout at me from the shelves until I pick them up and check them out. :D

  3. I have to say that the cover has to be interesting enough for me to pick the book up and read the inside jacket. It's really the summary that sells the book. However, I have found that both can be miss-leading.

  4. I totally agree. I would more likely pick up a cover with say, Nightshade unlike something like Perfect Chemistry. Because Beautiful covers are just so EYE popping :D

  5. I agree that covers go a long way in luring you in to at least find out more about the book.

  6. I love beautiful book covers!! Call it superficial, but there are just SO MANY books out there, that you really need to have that amazing cover in order for people to stop and pick up your book-- now, there is an obvious problem with judging a book by its cover-- some awesome books go unread due to less-than-exciting covers, and some books with gorgeous covers get way more attention than the stories within them deserve... That's why I'm glad I've started book blogging, so I can maybe catch some hidden gems without basing my decision on the cover alone!

  7. I'm definitely a sucker for beautiful covers O__O...
I mean I've read ugly books that were absolutely to die for, but I've read a ton of bad books with great covers :P

  8. @Lea, there are some great books out there who covers are not so great. I love finding hidden gems too.
@Sarah, I agree. A good cover does not make a good book.

    Thanks for stopping by :D
