1 Q&A with author Leigh Michael

1. Please tell me about your novel.
Sprite is a fast-paced, paranormal adventure with lots of twists and turns and touch of romance. Much of the background for the story is based on Greek mythology and folklore, but it’s set in present day. Annabelle is our protagonist who quickly realizes that she’s more than just human. She also happens to be the only one who can fulfill a prophecy started long ago. You can get all the details about Annabelle’s Story at www.LeighMichaelBooks.com. Also, Sprite will be FREE on Amazon from June 11 through June 13 (PST). Go get it!

2. Why did you choose to write about mythology?
Sprite happens to be my debut novel. Deciding to write within the YA genre was the easy part, but finding a subject matter to write about took some thought. Although I highly enjoy reading about vampires, werewolves, and witchcraft (and one day plan to put my own spin on the vampire world), I wanted to make my debut in a topic that wasn’t quite as saturated. In the end, I decided on water spirits and the underwater realm. As I began researching, I came across some amazing mythology stories and folklore pertaining to sirens and merfolk. From there, I couldn’t get my ideas down on paper fast enough.

3. What is your favorite mythological story?
I was really drawn to the stories surrounding Arethusa. In Greek mythology, she’s a nymph that is transformed into a stream. When reading Sprite, you’ll see that Arethusa is mentioned numerous times and is a central figure in the storyline.

4. What is the most interesting thing about Annabelle?
I think readers will find that Annabelle is an open book. Meaning, she shares so much of herself with us. I believe that her perseverance, skepticism, and kindness are elements that make her an interesting character. I know I will have done my job if people are able to relate with her, share in her adventure, and turn the final page feeling as if they know her.

5. How many books are you planning for this series?
Annabelle’s Story has a part one and a part two. The second half of Annabelle’s Story is called Kin and picks up at a huge turning point in her adventure. I’m currently engrossed in writing the manuscript and hope to release Kin at the end of the summer/beginning of fall 2012. If you follow me at www.LeighMichaelBooks.com you’ll be the first to know when it’s available.

6. What is the best book you've ever read?
Tough question. I tend to read series instead of single books. So I’d say that Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series really resonates with me. This may make me sound crazy, but I was so invested in the main character that I’d actually update my husband with what was going on in Rose’s life. This is the same connection that I hope my readers will have with Annabelle.

7. Name three things you can't live without?
Another tough question. First, I’d say my family (especially my husband and dog). Second, Swedish fish candy. Third, my running shoes.

8. What are some of your hobbies?
As I’m sure you can guess, I love to read and write. I also love to stay active. I’ve done a number of marathons, triathlons, and other endurance races. Running is actually a time when I do my best thinking.

9. What is your favorite movie?
Favorite movie… I’d have to say Pretty Woman is a film I could watch again and again.

10. Chocolate or Vanilla?
Hmm… this isn’t that simple of a question. Vanilla ice cream, Chocolate frosting, Vanilla pudding, Chocolate cake.

About Sprite: Annabelle Walsh thought she had it all. She was the star of her swim team, had a loving family, a great boyfriend, and to top it off, she’d be starting at UCLA in the fall. One day, she’d be referred to as Dr. Annabelle Walsh.

She was living every girl’s dream – until her life was turned upside down. All starting with finding out that she's not just a human, but also a water spirit. Half-human, half-sprite to be exact. Although not just any sprite, Annabelle is prophesied to be the only one who can save both the sprites and mankind.

With a mix of current events, anecdotes from Greek mythology, tidbits of folklore, and Leigh’s own imagination, we join Annabelle in her journey to restore order beneath the sea. Each step of the way her mind, body, and soul are pushed to the limit begging the question, how much can one half-human, half-sprite take?
