0 Review: Ghostly: A Collection of Ghost Stories

Title: Ghostly: A Collection of Ghost Stories
Author: Audrey Niffenegger
Publisher: Scribner
Published: October 13, 2015
Paperback, ARC
ISBN: 978150119750
Genre: Fiction, Short Stories, Paranormal
Source: Publisher

Summary:

Collected and introduced by the bestselling author of The Time Traveler's Wife and Her Fearful Symmetry--including Audrey Niffenegger's own fabulous new illustrations for each piece, and a new story by her--this is a unique and haunting anthology of some of the best ghost stories of all time.
From Edgar Allan Poe to Kelly Link, M.R. James to Neil Gaiman, H.H. Munro to Audrey Niffenegger herself, Ghostly reveals the evolution of the ghost story genre with tales going back to the eighteenth century and into the modern era, ranging across styles from Gothic Horror to Victorian, stories about haunting--haunted children, animals, houses. Every story is introduced by Audrey Niffenegger, an acclaimed master of the craft, with some words on its background and why she chose to include it. Audrey's own story is "A Secret Life With Cats."
Perfect for the classic and contemporary ghost story aficionado, this is a delightful volume, beautifully illustrated by Audrey, who is a graphic artist with great vision. Ghostly showcases the best of the best in the field, including Edith Wharton, P.G. Wodehouse, A.S. Byatt, Ray Bradbury, and so many more.

My Thoughts:

I started reading this book thinking that I would get goose bumps and have to sleep with the light on and jump at all the unusual sounds one hears throughout the night. But I was pleasantly surprised to find out not all ghost stories are creepy. Some, in fact, are quite funny. Although Audrey Niffenegger's name is on the cover, this book contains quite a treasure of eclectic writers from Edgar Allen Poe to Neil Gaiman.

Some readers may have read some of the stories before, but for me, they were all brand new. I really can't think of one story that I didn't enjoy. Of course I enjoyed some more than others, but each was good in its own way. The book starts off with a bang with "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe. And true to Poe's style, this story is disturbing. One of my other favorite stories is "Honeysuckle Cottage" by P.G. Wodehouse. If you're familiar with Jeeves and Wooster, then you'll love this story. It's hilarious! The creepiest story, in my opinion, is "Click-Clack the Rattlebag" by Neil Gaiman. This story sent chills up my spine.

I really liked the illustrations and introduction that each story has. Niffenegger did a great job capturing the spirit of each story with an accurate and sometimes creepy drawing. The introductions give a bit of background to either the story or the author, or sometimes both, that helps the reader understand the story's background.

This collection of ghost stories is something that I think even the faint of heart will enjoy. Though most aren't necessarily that creepy, some will make you want to turn all the lights on.

0 Review: Scary School #4: Zillions of Zombies

Title: Scary School #4: Zillions of Zombies
Author: Derek the Ghost
Published: September 1, 2015
Paperback, 246 pages
ISBN: 9781495168932
Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy
Source: Author

Summary:

After defeating the fearsome Ice Dragon, the students of Scary School were in full celebration mode with an awesome parade leading up to the Dance of Destiny. But when a bearodactyl snatches Charles Nukid and flies him to Monster Kingdom, his friends have to figure out a way to rescue him before he's served as lunch to one of the kingdom's horrifying creatures. Little do his friends know that he's actually been taken there to be crowned the next monster king after defeating King Zog in battle. But no sooner is he crowned than he is challenged by Turlock the Troll. While trying to avoid getting crushed by Turlock's crew, one of them breaks the Zombie Control Lever, which was keeping all the zombies of the world good and not ravenous for brains. Charles's friends arrive in the nick of time after barely surviving a zombie attack at Scary School. Reunited, they now have to find the one unicorn in existence whose magic is powerful enough to turn all the zombies back to good before every monster and human alike are turned into the mindless brain-eating dead.

My Thoughts:

Derek the Ghost is back with a brand new Scary School adventure. In the last book, Charles Nukid is kidnapped by a bearodactyl. But get this, instead of eating him, the bearodactyl flies him back to Monster Kingdom where he is crowned King of the Monsters. That's right, Charles is now king. However being a king has empowered Charles and the power goes to his head a bit. And Charles really needs his head since Scary School-- and the world-- is under attack from zombies. With the help of his friends, Charles has to find the only thing that can help--a unicorn's horn given freely. Easy, right?

Zombie's aren't really my thing. In fact, they creep me out more than any other supernatural creature. But because I love Scary School so much, I decided to brave it. Scary School already had Ramon the zombie, but he's like a cool zombie sports star, so he's not so threatening. But the zombies in this book are. You've been warned! But not so scary you'll have to sleep with the lights on. Unless you want to--that's totally your call.

I really enjoyed reading the last adventure of the Scary School kids. It's kind of bittersweet to say goodbye to this series after all this time. Derek the Ghost is a great narrator to this unusual but lovable bunch of kids and teachers. This last adventure really showed how much the kids have grown over the last four novels. If you're looking for a quirky, humorous series for your middle grade readers, then you should check out Scary School. Thanks Derek the Ghost for letting us into your world.

Publishing with Avon on October 27, 2015
Successful playwright Maggie Delamere has no interest in the flirtations of noblemen like Cameron, Viscount Marwood. She once paid dearly for a moment of weakness… and vows to rebuff the wildly persistent-and irritatingly handsome-scoundrel at every turn. But when pressure to deliver a new play hampers her creativity, an invitation to use his country estate as a writer’s retreat is too tempting to resist...
For years, Cam has admired Maggie’s brilliant work and he can’t pass up the opportunity to discover if the beautiful, mysterious playwright is as passionate and clever as the words that flow from her quill. He’s never offered a lady his bed without being in it, but if it means loosening Maggie’s pen-and her inhibitions-he’ll do exactly that.
But soon Cam’s plans for seduction become a fight for Maggie’s heart. He’s more than the scandalous, carefree rake society believes him to be… and she’s the only woman who has ever noticed.

FOREVER YOUR EARL Excerpt

Chapter One

“Though London presents itself to the world as the apotheosis of all that is moral and upstanding, it might shock our readers to learn that the appearance of virtue can be a very clever disguise.  It is the opinion of this humble periodical that wickedness and deception are far more common than our readers may apprehend. Thus the necessity of this most respectful scrap of writing—that we may, through the revelation of the scandalous activities of our Town, provide necessary guidance.  But leading a life of probity may be difficult, especially when presented with temptation…”
                                                            —from The Hawk’s Eye, May 2, 1816

London, 1816

A man rich in wealth and scandal walked into Eleanor Hawke's office.
Eleanor was no stranger to scandal. Anything immoral, disreputable, shocking, or titillating made its way into the pages of her newspaper—particularly if it involved the wealthy and elite of London Society.  She detailed all of it for her thrice weekly publication, The Hawk's Eye.  Nobody wanted to read about ordinary shopkeeper Mr. Jones who might or might not be spending time with the humdrum widow Mrs. Smith.
No, The Hawk's Eye sold strictly on the basis that it published the latest scandalous doings of Lord This and Lady That.  All, of course, under the pretense of decrying the lack of morals in this fair city, and that these lurid activities ought to serve as object lessons to the young and impressionable.
And it was Eleanor's job as owner and publisher to see to the moral education of London.
Which was utter rubbish, naturally.
But scandal put bread on her table and kept the rain off her head, and she readily immersed herself in it—the spirit of free enterprise, and all that.
Still, when Daniel Balfour, the Earl of Ashford himself walked into the offices of The Hawk's Eye on a Wednesday afternoon, blocking the gray light as the door opened and closed, it was both shocking and inevitable that he should do so.  Unsurprisingly, he clenched several copies of her paper in his hand.
Lord Ashford marched through the cramped warren of rooms, writers' heads lifting from where they bent over their desks to watch in open-mouthed amazement as he passed.  Eleanor’s private office lay at the end of the corridor, giving her an ample view of the scene as it played out before her.
The earl stopped in front of Harry Welker's desk.  The young writer stared up at the Lord Ashford, the men separated not just by the expanse of battered oak, but circumstance and birth.
“H…how might  I help you, my lord?” Harry asked, his voice cracking.
“Tell me where Mister E. Hawke is.”  Lord Ashford had a deep voice, rounded by generations of excellent breeding and noblesse oblige.
Mister Hawke, my lord?” patent confusion in his voice.
Lord Ashford pointed to one of the papers he carried. “It says here that The Hawk's Eye is owned and published by one E. Hawke.  Where will I find him?”
“Nowhere, my lord,” Harry answered.  “There's no Mister Hawke here.”
The earl scowled, clearly not used to being denied.  “This scurrilous rag cannot publish itself.”
“It doesn’t,” Eleanor announced, setting aside her quill and standing.  “If you're looking for Miss Eleanor Hawke, I’m right over here.”
Lord Ashford looked directly at her, and for the first time, she had a sense of what a rabbit might feel like when sited by a wolf.  But she wasn't the only one at a disadvantage.  The earl couldn't hide the shock in his expression when he discovered that the publisher and owner of the paper was, in truth, a woman—which gave her a small measure of gratification.
He turned from Harry without another word and walked straight toward her.  And she could only stand, pinned by his gaze, as he approached.

The closer he got, the more she realized how dangerous the earl was.  Perhaps not in the traditional sense—though she'd heard and written about the duels in which he'd fought and won—but certainly in the realm of masculine allure.  Her few times seeing him were from a distance: the theater, the races, at a public assembly.  She knew him by sight, but he didn’t know her, and they’d never met.  And in those instances her vision had been good enough to recognize that he was a fine specimen, well-formed, handsome—everything a rich and notorious nobleman should be.

0 BEFORE THE STORM by @leslie_tentler is out NOW! #books #new #suspense @Barclay_PR

No Matter How Far You Run, The Past Will Find You

Leslie Tentler is back with another story of romance and suspense…this time in a small Southern beach town called Rarity Cove. What happens when a woman on the run has her dangerous secrets finally catch up with her? Find out in Before the Storm by Leslie Tentler…

About BEFORE THE STORM

Six years earlier, Trina Grissom disappeared, on the run for her life. Now living under an assumed identity—as Samantha Marsh—she still struggles with the dark secret she harbors and the fear she might one day be found. When she moves to the coastal town of Rarity Cove, South Carolina, to open a café, a handsome widower begins to chip away at the walls she’s built to protect herself.

Mark St. Clair lost his wife two years ago in a tragic accident. Head of the grand St. Clair resort, he distracts himself from his lingering grief by running the family business and caring for his troubled young daughter...until a beautiful restaurateur sets up shop in town. Before meeting Samantha, Mark was convinced he could never be drawn to another woman. But as his attraction to Samantha grows, the mystery surrounding her deepens.

As the two begin a hesitant courtship, double perils emerge. Someone from Samantha’s lurid past comes calling, threatening to expose her. And a powerful hurricane is forming in the Atlantic with the small beach town in its path. Trapped in the storm by the brutal man who wants vengeance on Samantha, she and Mark must fight for their lives.

EXCERPT

The Sea King Motor Court sat off the two-lane highway heading inland out of Rarity Cove. A good four miles from the beach, the one-story, painted cinderblock structure was outdated and somewhat run-down, with a small swimming pool surrounded by a chain-link fence next to the parking lot. Samantha walked past the unoccupied, darkened pool, clutching her purse that contained Lenny’s payoff.
Room six. She stood outside it and reminded herself to breathe. But her courage felt shattered, like so many broken shell fragments washed up along the shore. The porch light beside the door had either burned out or been purposely extinguished. If not for the moon overhead and the iridescent, droning orange of the motel signage, she would be in eerie darkness.
Nearly choking on dread, Samantha knocked. As she waited, her fingers roamed inside her purse until she felt the handle of the kitchen knife she’d brought with her from Café Bella. If Lenny tried to take more than the money, if he grabbed her and tried to force her…
Samantha shivered despite the evening’s humidity. Jittery, she knocked again, louder this time.
The muffled blare of a television came from another of the guest rooms. But the one in front of her remained silent. Samantha glanced at her wristwatch, checking the time again. Five minutes past eleven. An eighteen-wheeler pulled into the parking lot, its big tires crunching over gravel. It came to a stop at the far side of the motel. A driver wearing cowboy boots, jeans and a baseball cap climbed down from the cab. The man approached and nodded politely at her as he traveled past, then disappeared inside one of the rooms.
Samantha knocked again on Lenny’s door, this time with the flat of her hand. Her palm smarted with the effort. But again there was no response. What kind of game was he playing?
Weak with pent-up fear and growing frustration, Samantha moved to the window and tried to peer between the slit in the closed curtains. But the room’s interior appeared dark. She sagged onto the white plastic lawn chair next to the air conditioner vent. A thin trail of water leaked from the unit across the grimy concrete stoop, reaching her leather thong sandals. She hadn’t worn the requested stripper heels.
She wondered what to do. Keep waiting? For how long? She squinted at a line of plastic flamingos planted in the motel’s patchy Bermuda grass. They called attention to a sign urging passersby to inquire about weekly rent specials.
Lenny wasn’t home, apparently. Samantha rubbed her hands over her upper arms, confused. Had he forgotten it was his payday?
That didn’t seem possible.

0 Review: Last Night's Reading

Title: Last Night's Reading: Illustrated Encounters with Extraordinary Authors
Author: Kate Gavino
Publisher: Penguin
Published: October 27, 2015
Paperback, 160 pages
ISBN: 9780143127314
Genre: Literature/Pop Culture

Summary:

Irresistible illustrations of authors and the charming, wise, and hilarious things they say at their readings

Why do we go to book readings? For a chance to see the authors we love come to life off the page, answering our questions and proving to be the brilliant, witty people we catch glimpses of through their work. Illustrator Kate Gavino captures the wonder of this experience firsthand. At every reading she attends, Kate hand-letters the event’s most memorable quote alongside a charming portrait of the author. In Last Night’s Reading, Kate takes us on her journey through the literary world, sharing illustrated insight from more than one hundred of today’s greatest writers—including Zadie Smith, Junot Diaz, Lev Grossman, Elizabeth Gilbert, and many more—on topics ranging from friendship and humor to creativity and identity. A celebration of authors, reading, and bookstores, this delightful collection is an advice book like no other and a love letter to the joy of seeing your favorite author up close and personal.

My Thoughts:

There's nothing more exciting than seeing your favorite author give a reading. And Kate Gavino has been to many. She's attended readings around  Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. She basically lives in the epicenter of the literary world. In short, I'm super jealous of her. She's chronicled her adventures on Tumblr, and  now she's turned her Tumblr into a fantastic book so that the rest of us can live vicariously through her.

Gavino uniquely captures each author with a colorful portrait and a quote from the author. Each tells its own story, some with humor, some with advice on writing and/or life. Even though I could explain this book in so many words, nothing speaks louder than a picture.

And while you get a sense of camaraderie with Gavino about her love for books, you also get to delve a little deeper with the author herself. She's definitely someone you would want to sit down to have coffee with or squee over the latest release from your favorite author.

This is definitely a book that you'll want to add to your library or gift to your favorite book lover. You won't regret it!

And here's one more for the road:

0 Pride and Prejudice and Zombies . . . It's happening.

Published back in 2009, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is an interesting take on the classic story. The movie is starring Lily James (Cinderella and Downton Abbey) as Elizabeth Bennet, Sam Riley (Maleficent) as Mr. Darcy, and Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Mr. Collins. It's set to be released in 2016.

I'm not a huge zombie fan but I might have to check this one out.

Want to read the book first? Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is available in most stores.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.”

So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield. Can Elizabeth vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you’d actually want to read.

Excerpt

While the halls beside it crumbled from the strain of staying upright, Pembroke Castle’s keep had stood through eight long centuries of tumult, and looked capable of weathering another eight with ease. It had been poked at, over time. Bits of the parapet surrounding the domed roof had tumbled down, or been removed, and when we walked round to the north side I could see the black and jagged hole that marked the first-floor entrance, stripped of all its finer facing stones. But such small scars went virtually unnoticed on a building so imposing.
“I’m not sure you should be doing that,” said James, as I scampered up the flight of steps toward the gaping doorway. “Those steps might not be safe. And anyway, you can’t get in that way, you have to go through here.”
The steps didn’t feel dangerous, but I didn’t imagine that open defiance was something James craved in an agent, and I ought to be trying to show him how well I could listen. Reluctantly, I turned back and went through the proper entrance, a much smaller door set at ground level. It felt like walking through a tunnel—the walls of the keep must have been a good twenty feet thick—but at length it discharged us, like puny adventurers, into the cavernous space.
“You see?” James, who had seen it before, pointed up at a ragged-edged hole, streaming light. “It’s a doorway to nothing, the floors have all gone.”
I had tipped my head backward, struck dumb by the sight.
Originally, there would have been three or more levels here, comfortable rooms, wooden floors, warming fires that burned in the royal apartments, but all of that was lost now to the callous hand of time. What remained, though, was in some ways more impressive.
Stripped to its bare outer walls, it was like a cathedral, a great hollow soaring cathedral of stone, with a perfect domed ceiling and small arching windows that slanted pale light through the reverent gloom. From every ledge and opening long streaks of soft and mossy green dripped downward, passing shades of rust and gentle blues that stained the walls in places where the plaster had not fallen from the gray, unyielding stones.
I took a breath, inhaling dust, and fumbled for my guidebook. “Seventy-five feet,” I said, in awe. “This shaft is seventy-five feet tall.”
James looked at me. “You say that as though it’s a challenge.”
“It is.” I’d always liked climbing things. Turning, I spotted the newel stair, and happily squeezed up one tight winding flight to the first narrow landing. Resting my hands on the cold metal piping that served as a guardrail, I leaned through the open arched doorway to look down at James. “Coming up?”
“No, I’ve done it once, thank you.” He sauntered forward, moving through a shifting web of light and shadow, to see me better. By the time I reached the third and final landing, he was standing in the center of the floor. “Do warn me if you’re going to fall,” he said, “so I can step aside.”
“You wouldn’t catch me?”
“From that height? You must be mad.”
I took a firm grip on the guardrail and leaned out as far as I dared, to admire the view. The dome, from this height, was a marvel of masonry, hundreds of stones set with perfect precision to form an impossible half sphere that floated above me. Absorbed, I leaned further, and felt my hand slip in the instant before something clamped round my shoulder.
“Don’t worry,” said Gareth, behind me. “I’ll catch you.”
