Daniel has spent centuries falling in love with the same girl. Life after life, crossing continents and dynasties, he and Sophia (despite her changing name and form) have been drawn together-and he remembers it all. Daniel has "the memory", the ability to recall past lives and recognize souls of those he's previously known. It is a gift and a curse. For all the times that he and Sophia have been drawn together throughout history, they have also been torn painfully, fatally, apart. A love always too short.
Many of you are probably familiar with Ann Brashares for writing the Sister of the traveling pants series. This was the first book I read by her. My first thought was: What could be more romantic then two people reincarnated over and over to be with each other? I like this book because it wasn’t exactly as I expected. Daniel and Lucy’s (or Sophia) relationship is complicated in an unusual way. Daniel has a problem letting go of the past to connect with the present. Lucy does not remember Daniel or their past lives, but is still drawn to him. This epic story spans over hundreds of years. It goes back and forth between the present and the past. Some of the story is very heartbreaking. The struggle to be together is inspiring. I hope it translates to the big screen because rumor has it; they are making it a movie. One question that has been plaguing me is: Does anyone know if there will be a sequel to this book? I am anxious to know. If there is, I will definitely read it!
