Summary: Griffin Rising is an urban fantasy about an apprentice angel and his coming of age under the tutelage of a father-like mentor. As one of the mysterious Terrae Angeli, Griffin secretly navigates life among humans while preparing for the trial-by-combat every apprentice must pass or become mortal.

This is one of those books I have a hard time writing a review for. Not because I don't like it but because I really like it. I think this book is phenomenal. Griffin Rising by Darby Karchut is the story about an angel. Griffin spends the first few years of his life mentally and physically abused by his mentor. Things change for him when he receives his new mentor, Basil. Basil is repulsed by what was done to Griffin. Not only does he have to make up for the lack of training Griffin didn't receive but he also has to find a way to get Griffin to come out of his shell.
The characters in this novel are fantastic. I especially like Basil. Basil is a middle aged angel. I love the way he used humor, patience and understanding to help Griffin. He has to build up Griffin's self esteem while also being firm but gentle at the same time. He is a great character.
This story is told from three different points of view and journal entries. Basil encourages Griffin to write in his journal. This is a type of therapy for Griffin. Basil also keeps a journal as well as Griffin's crush, Katie. I love getting the three different perspectives on the events. Katie is a great addition to this story. She's Griffin's first crush but she doesn't believe in angels.
Griffin Rising has themes such as perseverance, acceptance, and love. It is heartwarming and gritty mixed with humor at the same time. Darby Karchut did a wonderful job with this story. It is a quick and fascinating read. I was on the edge of my seat for most of this book. With out any spoilers, I have to tell you that I did not expect the ending. I don't think I can put into words my reaction to it. I really enjoyed this book. I think you should check out this debut novel by Darby Karchut. The next book in the series, Griffin's Fire comes out in April one 2012.
