On Simplicity and Writing Your First Book by Shane Michael Murray

On Simplicity and Writing Your First Book by Shane Michael Murray. I recently published my first novel, and thought it best to give a little idea of the process I used while it is all still fresh. What I learned more than anything is that it is best to start simple and do that simple thing well. Writing is an art, and learning an art takes time. Start simple; your masterpiece can come later.  While this information is probably most useful to new writers, I am sure experienced writers will find this interesting as well, if only to remind them of a few fundamentals. 0. Read If you don’t read much, you probably don’t have much business writing; it’s like trying to join a team football game without going to practice to learn the rules. No matter how great the story you want to tell is, you will need to learn some skills to back it up. Monkey see, monkey do. No see, no do. 1. Write What You Know Write in the genre you read the most. This will be the one with which you ha

How Lauren Baratz-Logsted likes to chill during the summer.

I'm afraid to say, you don't get over 30 books published in 10 years by worrying yourself overmuch with domestic issues. My motto? "If the microwave still works, we're eating tonight; and if nothing is actively crawling, this place is clean enough." So how do I keep cool in the summer? Very nicely. I open a bottle of Prosecco, fill the big wineglass so I don't have to waste too much time on extra trips to the fridge, and then I take it and a good book and go to sit on the bench out front. As of this writing, it's not officially summer yet, but it is a gorgeous day out, which means that tonight you can find me...  Lauren Baratz-Logsted, author of  The Bro-Magnet  and  Pursuing the Times

The Bookman's Tale Giveaway

Hay-on-Wye, 1995. Peter Byerly isn’t sure what drew him into this particular bookshop. Nine months earlier, the death of his beloved wife, Amanda, had left him shattered. The young antiquarian bookseller relocated from North Carolina to the English countryside, hoping to rediscover the joy he once took in collecting and restoring rare books. But upon opening an eighteenth-century study of Shakespeare forgeries, Peter is shocked when a portrait of Amanda tumbles out of its pages. Of course, it isn’t really her. The watercolor is clearly Victorian. Yet the resemblance is uncanny, and Peter becomes obsessed with learning the picture’s origins. As he follows the trail back first to the Victorian era and then to Shakespeare’s time, Peter communes with Amanda’s spirit, learns the truth about his own past, and discovers a book that might definitively prove Shakespeare was, indeed, the author of all his plays. Thanks to Viking, I have one copy of The Bookman's Tale: A Novel of Obsess

The Rockin’ Chair excerpt

The Rockin’ Chair excerpt Alice could feel the sun on her eyelids before she dared opening them. Beginning with a squint, she was blinded by the light that engulfed the room. Taking a second to adjust, she shook off the two quilts that restrained her, and then grabbed for her flowered housecoat at the foot of the massive bed. Throwing it on, she steadied her tiny feet into a pair of worn moccasins, all-the-while wondering, Why didn’t Ma let me sleep in? It don’t make no sense. It’s Saturday…with no responsibilities to school or church. She felt tired, more exhausted than usual, but waking to a fire burning into her pupils was certainly not the way to start such a pretty day. Making the mental note, I’ll have to talk to Ma about the rude awakening , she stumbled and had to brace herself at the doorway. Her mind had sent some message that her body could not interpret. Brushing it off as fatigue, she started again toward the kitchen, thinking, Maybe Ma will let me help with brea

Dark Innocence Blog Tour: Rahima Warren Guest Post and Giveaway

My Unusual Writer’s Journey Once upon a time, I was a psychotherapist, minding my own business, and seeing my clients. I never thought I’d write a fantasy story, let alone a trilogy! Then one day, I wrote a little story in my journal. The idea was to write down my inner fantasy/dream character’s story so he’d stop bugging me. Big mistake! That little story ignited a bonfire! Over a decade later, I’ve retired from my practice, and have written a dark, deep, spiritual and healing fantasy trilogy, entitled THE STAR-SEER’S PROPHECY . So far the first book in the trilogy, DARK INNOCENCE, has been published. How’d this happen, you ask? It wasn’t my idea! The hero—his name is Kyr, by the way—had quite a journey to go on. The only way he could do it was to take over my life and turn me into a writer. Of course, I could have told him “no” and kept on ignoring him. But one thing I had learned on my journey was to honor whatever emerges from the unconscious/dreaming mind, no matt
