Shadow Born Guest Post and Giveaway

Everyone tells me I’m a writer, but I still maintain that I am more of a story teller of sorts than anything. My main reason for this is that I have no trouble putting words down on a page, but I am horrible at both spelling and grammar. Fortunately spellcheck has taken much of the frustration out of one of those two quirks of mine.
My main focus in any story or novel I write is getting to know my characters. I want to understand them, feel their pain or frustration, and really get a sense of who they are. Usually their backgrounds start light on detail, but begin to unfold just as rapidly as the stories and worlds they are written in. One detail gets added on top of another and suddenly that dark haired boy with sad eyes on page one is no longer as he seems, he has a secret that keeps him in the shadows, and that secret could cost him his life. See how that happened there? In an instant, an idea or personality is born, and it just keeps expanding. That is what I love about writing. There are no limits, the world is your own and for a moment everything is possible. Your characters can end up being movie stars, or they can be hotdog vendors, and in the process the movie star might not even end up being the important one in the plot.
I have been writing long before I ever put pencil to paper or fingers to keyboard. A prime example is my novel, Shadow Born. I came up with the basic premise about a boy with a gift that no one understood in middle school. I wrote other things over the years, but the idea stuck with me and took hold. It wasn’t easy getting Raffin’s story right, there were a lot of bumps along the way. Over the years he had various names, physical traits, magic powers, and different girls in his life - but the core idea remained unchanged with the revisions and rewrites made. It is a story of hope in dark times, of loss, and longing to be loved and belong - no matter what.
I hope readers enjoy Shadow Born as much as I have writing it and its series.
Thank you for having me and Shadow Born on your blog. It’s been a lot of fun.

Shadow Born
Eighteen-year-old Raffin has been in hiding on Earth since before he was born, but he’s more comfortable in the shadows anyway. He’s part of one of the most hated races in the universe. It’s a secret he’s forced to keep from everyone he meets.
On his first day at a new high school, Arianna Val crashes into his world, literally. One tumble on the track field and suddenly she’s acting like they’re best friends. Worse, Raffin doesn’t mind her invading his shadows — and that’s before he realizes she knows his secret. But, she’s not quite human, herself and her very life force is what Raffin needs to survive.
Can he trust her to keep his secret? Can he trust himself with Ari when his body yearns to drain her soul? Assailed by memories of death and destruction that aren’t his own, Raffin has to come to terms with the truth. He is shadow born.
